Jules' Musings-Nerdtacular 2012
Monday, June 25. 2012
Wow.
This has been an experience for the top 10 list that exists in my brain. You know the one...where you rank your best moments in life? Nerdtacular 2012, you have made the list.
If you've never heard of Nerdtacular, here's the 30 second version: a gathering of fans of the Frogpants Studios Network, headed by Scott Johnson. Scott is a cartoonist and podcaster of shows like The Instance, The Morning Stream, Film Sack, The Final Score, App Slappy, & The Instance: TOR Edition. The event lasts for one day, but the fans gather for days before and after the event to socialize, meet new people and just be nerdy. The event is just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, which is where Scott lives.
Arcayne and I arrived on Friday afternoon, got our car and made our way to our hotel. When we got there, I realized that I'd made a mistake on the Hampton Inn I selected and chose a location 15 mins away from the event. The other Hampton is right around the corner. Ugh.
I decided to call the hotel manager and ask if there was anything we could do to get us to the right hotel. Long story short, the Hampton managers are top-notch. They worked with me every step to get me rebooked and never hesitated to accommodate me so we'd be happy. I'm so grateful to them and I'll recommend Hampton properties forever.
I realized quickly that the Hampton Inn Sandy was THE nerd hotel for the event. Most of the show producers were staying there, as well as many, many other attendees. We took over the whole lobby day and night, socializing, playing games, and hanging out with the people who make the shows we love to hear. I was so happy we were staying there, too.
The first night we were there, there was a gathering at a park pavillion for people to play games, play music, and meet new people. We went to that event, quickly meeting a number of new fans of the shows and we played Cards Against Humanity. What an awesome game and a great icebreaker. (shoutouts to Logan, Rebecca, Julia, Yasmin, Seyani and anyone I missed!)
Then it was Nerdtacular day. We got there at 8am and we got back to our hotel at 11:30pm. I met so many people, including one of my guildmates and healer on our raid team! The kindness, admiration, respect, camaraderie, and the feeling of family was there at every moment. I have such a hard time describing it because there was just so much happening. My biggest highlights were watching the podcasters panel and their Q&A, the live Film Sack recording, and the concert with Paul and Storm. I learned so much, laughed harder than I have in a long time, and came away with a permanent smile on my face.
On Sunday, the event had one more piece - a free screening of Pixar's Brave. Being in a theater full of nerds is so fun and we had a blast. Then we had the rest of the day to relax and go out on our own.
One of the most enjoyable parts of our trip was the chance to meet Pat Krane from the Convert to Raid podcast. Cayne and I are big fans of CtR, and we try to listen to their livestream on Sunday mornings while they record. We spent a lot of time with Pat, and wound up sightseeing in downtown SLC together. Pat is a great guy, very funny, and extremely knowledgeable, and it was wonderful to get to know him better. (Thanks for the fun, Pat! I look forward to talking with you soon.)
To close out our experience, we met a number of people in the hotel lobby and all went to dinner together and then gathered in the hotel to play a massive game of Cards Against Humanity. We even got a guest appearance from Brian Ibbott from Coverville and The Morning Stream, and playing with him was hysterical fun. (huge shoutouts to Joel, Jocelyn, Andrew, Tod, Steve, Pat, Gary, and anyone I forgot. That night was epic!)
These were my people. It was everything I hoped for and even more than I'd imagined. I'm coming home with new friends, unforgettable memories, and an unwavering commitment to come back next year come hell or high water. I need my nerd fix, even if it's only once a year.

Level 26 and Healing!
Thursday, June 21. 2012

So, I went back to Resto and grabbed my brother-in-law, Ironhide and made him tank for me. Well, he volunteered. He actually leveled a Tauren Paladin to my level and waited for me to continue on my quest. He's a good kid. Misunderstood, but good nonetheless. Anyways, we agreed not to level without each other and having my own personal tank makes things pretty easy. Especially when we encounter d-bags in a group.
Yes, d-bags. We were in Stockades and I wanted Ironhide to pull all the rooms; I wanted XP and was close to my third level of the night. These two guys didn't want to wait so they started to say things like, "My grandma can pull faster". They went ahead and got killed. I asked them to leave and they refused. I had 3 minutes on the kick timer. They went ahead and tried to pull the boss, but Hogger murdered them. I was then able to kick both. So, whatever. I still go into these dungeons with a Raid Leader mentality. It's all business, you know?
The response to Episode 7 has been incredible. It is our most downloaded episode to date and I would like to thank Koltrane for hitting us with the Koltrane bump. This weekend is going to be a little different as Jules is on her way to Nerdtacular 2012, but we've got fun things planned and you'll have TTT in your earholes for Episode 8.
You guys are awesome. That you've taken the time to listen to us is one thing. That's incredible on its own. But those of you who have interacted with the show, either through emails or tweets, or even the toons on Wyrmrest Accord who have whispered me, really make this whole thing special. We love that you listen, we love that you want to talk with us, and we really love that you trust us to talk about and answer your questions. It is truly humbling.
We've got what looks like a couple big things that we can't talk about right now, so things are really coming together. Maybe one day, my wife will actually believe in me! LOL Yes, leave that LOL there, Phytt. It conveys me making a joke and laughing about it.

Jules' Musings - June 15, 2012

What a crazy, amazing week.
Last week and leading into the beginning of this week were kind of a blur. We recorded TTT last Wednesday and last Sunday, and then guest-hosted with Rich and Dustin on Horde for Life on Monday. It felt like I was in front of a microphone a lot, and when Rem and I weren't recording, we were preparing for the next session. It was wonderful, and exhausting, and a true test of balancing life to do the thing I love.
And then, Tuesday came. We released Episode 6 with Koltrane as our first-ever guest.
I don't think I was truly prepared for the explosion that hit when that episode went live. The outpouring of positive comments, people quoting lines that we said on Twitter, the influx of new followers and the huge increase in downloads for all of our episodes has just been exhilarating. I don't think I've stopped smiling for days.
I think all three of us were nervous for different reasons. Would this work? Would our chemistry mesh together? Does our format support the presence of a guest? Rem and I agreed that we wanted to try a guest host as an occasional thing, not on a regular basis. I can honestly say that Koltrane was the perfect choice to try this out for the first time, and it was amazing. I've said this multiple times, but I'll repeat it again - we were all exhausted and sore from laughter after we finished that show. It felt incredibly special and the dynamic between the three of us couldn't have been any better.
Now the question we keep asking ourselves is, how could we ever top this guest appearance? It looks like the answer for right now is, we really don't want to try to top that. We are just going to keep doing what love to do, and what has been working for us - be ourselves, enjoy the experience, and see where the road takes us. One thing is for certain, though - you won't see the last of Koltrane on our show. We will have him back again sometime in the future because you can't let such a good dynamic go to waste.
I want to thank all of the new listeners who have wrote us and told us they are loving the show. We read every e-mail and every Tweet you send us and we try to respond to them all. If someday it gets to the point where we can't respond to everyone, we will ALWAYS read everything you send to us. That's what our show is about - you.
And finally, a special thank you to Koltrane. You are one of the funniest and most dynamic people I have ever met and I feel very lucky to have gotten the opportunity to work with you!
Until next time...
Jules

Level 23 and Post Koltrane
Tuesday, June 12. 2012

So, Remmox hit level 23 tonight and I must admit, I 1) am no good at resto-ing and 2) don't like resto-ing. I healed my way through Shadowfang Keep and the HoT's are just too unpredictable to me. I've played WoW a long time and have only ever played two healing classes. This Resto Druid and a Resto Shaman. I enjoyed healing on the Shaman. It was easier to predict; I'm just having a hard time figuring this Druid out. So, and I am sorry TTT listeners, I sent my agility heirlooms over and took the kitty out for a ride.
And I don't like kitty either.
I think when I get back to Remmox, I'll set him up as a bear and give that a go. At least until I acquire enough decent gear to go Balance. I feel bad to disappoint you all, but instead of having fun I'm finding frustration. But I'll keep at it, there's no giving up in this Rem!
Moving on, we finished a busy half week of podcasting last night. We recorded episode 5 last Wednesday, wrote episode 6, recorded episode 6 with Koltrane on Sunday, then guested on the Horde For Life podcast last night. Being a guest was different. Just showing up and answering questions instead of writing and guiding a show along - it wasn't easier, just different. Rich and Dustin were awesome and we had a good time with them.
By now you've probably listened to episode 6. I was killing myself the day after. I was actually late to the recording! There was a family event that went long and I had to rush home and right into the recording, never having time to refocus and put myself in the right moment. I felt like I missed so much and when it was time to wrap up, I didn't want Koltrane to leave! I have to thank Jules for keeping me settled the day after as my mind was running a million miles a second with all the shoulda, coulda, woulda's. I hope you enjoyed the episode, next time we have Koltrane back on our little WoW podcast, I promise it'll be even better.
I'm already itching to record episode 7.
Writing Out The Nerves
Sunday, June 10. 2012
You know, I really had no idea where this little WoW podcast would take us. It was just an idea I threw at Jules after spending 5 weeks listening to a bunch of other shows. Slowly, I began to realize, you know, I could do this. But who to do it with?
There was really no one else I thought of besides Jules. It's funny how much of a brain we do sometimes share. So I said to her, "Jules, I want to do a podcast." Knowing she wouldn't laugh at me, I expected a "that's nice, Rem" type of reply. But no, she came right back with, "I would totally do a podcast." I immediately replied with, "Oh yeah? Well, I'm sure Phytt will produce it." Mind you, I hadn't even mentioned it to him before.
Well, here we are. A WoW Podcast about the WoW Player, Tauren Think Tank. And you know what? It's incredible. And today, Sunday June 10, 2012, we are soon to have a guest who is really an inspiration to me as a podcaster. I have always been impressed by people with "golden" voices. Voice acting was something I always wanted to do. Radio was also on that list. I actually spent a couple weeks at The Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Things didn't work out and my dreams kind of went away.
And now, Koltrane will be our guest. I will have his brain to pick at! I am not jealous of him by any stretch. I admire him for the talent he possesses. He can do things with his voice that I've always wanted to do, but never developed because a long time ago I gave up on it. But dreams can be reignited. They can be lifted up, thrown into the air and chased after all over again. I'm a perfect example.
Needless to say, I am so very excited to be able to talk to Koltrane, let alone have him as a guest on Tauren Think Tank. I'm also nervous - but that's a good thing. Jules says it means I care.
I really hope you all enjoy the show when it is released. We're on a funky schedule this week because of the move to Sundays, but it'll fall back into line after this show. Thanks so much for listening. You have no idea how much the feedback we get means to both Jules and I. We love it. If we had the time to do a show everyday we would because we love doing this for you, the TTT audience.
Yes, Remmox will hit another level soon!! I've been busy, but I haven't stopped!

Level 19
Monday, June 4. 2012

Hey guys! Hit level 19 tonight just by questing. Not much to say about this one, but I'm a quarter of the way to level 20.
Had a blast with Jules, Kayne, and Phytt doing the Game of Thrones special. It was nice to do something a little different, get away from WoW for a moment, but then watch in amazement how everything always comes back to WoW. Let us know if you guys liked the Special, and maybe we can do more of them. Podcasting is a blast, by the way. I've never had so much fun doing...well...anything. Jules and I are always talking about the rush we get after doing a show; I remind her how I have a really hard time sleeping after. And then I wait until we get some feedback - oh my god, how I need, how I crave the feedback. It's weird.
So, yeah, thanks for listening, and I hope we didn't ruin Game of Thrones for you! There's spoiler warnings all over the place, but still, be careful!
Level 18
Saturday, June 2. 2012

Okay, so I was all set to go watch the first episode of Breaking Bad after being convinced to do so by Twitter. But then I realize, oh shoot, I won't have much time to level Remmox until Monday. So I had to go in and grab a level. Here's the best part of the night. I queued for the dungeon finder, but it wasn't popping, so I decided to do some questing. As I'm rolling along, an alliance priest comes up beside me and he's flagged for PVP. I'm like, Umm....okay? But then, after I tagged a mob, he would kill it. He actually followed me around and helped make my questing faster! I think I did about 9 quests in 20 minutes and hit level 18 while turning them in.
His name was Epichealz, Alliance Priest. Sir, I thank you. Sure, you creeped me out a little bit, but it turned out to be great fun. Especially when that Questgiver decided to attack you and you had to murder him. It was funnier when I went to turn the quest in and he still hadn't respawned! No seriously, that was hilarious. I'd put a LOL here, but Phytt would get made at me for not using proper grammar.
It's the internet, Phytt.
Jules' Musings - June 1, 2012
Friday, June 1. 2012
Happy Friday, everyone! Since Rem is blogging about leveling his new druid, I thought I'd make my contributions on... whatever I want!
I had a rather strange situation this week after Rem, Phytt and I completed recording episode 4. It was getting pretty late - about 11:30pm - and I was ready to head to bed. I went into my bedroom to my closet and realized that the attic crawl space cover was open and resting on the side of the opening. This is strange on about 100 levels. It's a suspended cover, meaning that you have to push the square piece of sheetrock straight up the chute to get through the opening in the ceiling. It requires a ladder to reach it, and neither Kayne nor I EVER go up there.
I went downstairs to ask Kayne why the cover was open, and he looked at me like I was asking him why there was a gryphon in the house. As I suspected, he had no idea about this either. So, he joined me upstairs and we stood there gaping at each other, trying to figure out how the heck this could have even occurred. Nothing was out of place in the house. All 3 cats were fine. This was the only thing amiss.
My only plausible theory is that we had a wicked thunderstorm a few days prior, and my stepdaughter had left the garage door open while she was playing with friends. Kayne went through our mud room to close the garage door, and the sheer power of the wind ripped at least two doors closed inside the house. Could it be that the suction of the outside wind (which was gusting to at least 50 mph when he opened the door to the house) could be enough to suck the crawl space cover into the attic? I figure it's a long shot, but it COULD be possible... right?
Of course, when Kayne went to work the next day, no less than 3 of his co-workers chalked it up to ghosts. Great, huh? I do believe that kind of thing is possible, but this is a new house, built 4 years ago and we've been the only owners. We haven't had anything else weird like this before.
So, we still have no idea. But, each of us keeps checking the space closely whenever we go into our closet... just to be sure.
